LUNAR MONTHS AND LUNAR YEAR

In order to distinguish one chandramasa from another, they are given different names. They are Chaitra, Vaisakha, Jyestha, Ashadha, Sravana, Bhadrapada, Ashwayuja (or Ashvina), Kartika, Margashira (Or Agrahayana), Pushya, Magha and Phalguna. These are the names of some nakshatras. In Chaitra maasa on Poornima day, the moon is generally in the Chitra Nakshatra (not true always). Similarly in the Jyeshtha maasa, the moon is in the Jyeshtha nakshatra normally, and so on.That is why theses names are chosen for the lunar months.
